Era of the Internet

Now a day people have very busy schedules and find no time to wait and in fact they don’t want to wait for anything. Everyone prefers to get everything instantly. This not only includes food, money transfer, shopping etc., and also, even in updating their knowledge.  A person in today’s trend want to know the entire happenings immediately even if it happens on the other side of the world. So the search went on…. And then came, a very great explorer to this world called “the internet” which satisfies and comply with all the expectations of the world.

Internet plays a vital role in this modern culture. It provides fabulous services to it’s users. In fact internet makes life easy. It plays the major part in most the people’s lives. It consumes human time very rapidly and occupies human brain with no break. At any point of time any information can be retrieved by using Internet. I can say that majority of the human population depend on Internet for their daily activities like Internet banking, internet marketing, booking tickets etc… Irrespective of age group Internet has been used and it’s more user friendly. It can be accessible at lower rate from any corner of the world. There are numerous Internet Jobs available that facilitates people to earn. Internet consists of both Good and bad things and the choice is on us. Internet has reached all groups of people in the society and lots of innovations are happening. So I wish to conclude by saying that this is the “age of Internet”.

Evolution of Storage Disks Part IV (5¼ inch floppy)

In our previous articles, we saw how the 8-inch floppy drives came into existence and its development in due course of time. As time passed by, people felt that the 8-inch floppies were really big for the desktops to use. And this led to the development of 5 ¼ inch disk. Its capacity was 98.5KB and then later increased to 110KB. In the year 1978, Apple introduced the 5¼ inch floppy disks called DISK II for the Apple II machines. Its size was 113 KB and later on increased to 140 KB in the year 1980.

In the late 1980’s, quad density disks were developed which abundantly increased the storage capacity to 720KB. This is almost 5 times greater than the previously used disks

. In the year 1984, came the high density disks with a storage capacity of almost 10 times more than the previous disks. This had a storage capacity of 1200 KB (1.2MB). These high density disks were identical to the double density disks except for their labels. In these situations the drive itself was unable to find the type of media used, and hence it was possible for a high density disk drive to format a double density disk to the higher capacity which resulted in bad sectors. This problem was due to the high-coercivity oxide coating on the disk which required strong magnetic field to write data onto it.

The double density disks required fewer magnetic fields for the writing purpose. In order to format or write to this high-coercivity media, the high-density drive switched its heads into a mode using a stronger magnetic field. When these stronger fields were written onto a double-density disk (having lower coercivity media), the strongly magnetized oxide particles would begin to affect the magnetic charge of adjacent particles. The net effect is that the disk would literally begin to erase itself. On the other hand, the opposite procedure (attempting to format an HD disk as DD) would fail almost every time, as the high-coercivity media would not retain data written by the low-power DD field. This problem was then overcome by the 3½ inch floppies.

Free

This is one single word that pulls the crowd towards any product or service. In the field of business management, this word is considered as the most powerful word. Many consumers will fall in the trap called "free offer". The business tycoons increase the price of a product of service which they provide and they will give a free gift and hide the increase in price.

In the world of internet technology, in earlier times, when something came as free, the internet visitors used to rush towards it. But as the time passed, there were lot of threats like virus, hacking and cracking came along with the free soft wares. So the internet visitors are now very much aware of all these free stuffs and they take a preventive measure when someone offers something for free. I get reminded about a saying "nothing comes free" and "no pain no gain". These proverbs are proven as true even in this technology age.

One suggestion from my side for the internet users is, never ever click in any attractive banners which says some free service or software available for free without any clear knowledge about the same. If we click on those links, there are lots of possible chances for our system getting hacked. When it comes to business transactions, we should stay away from these free offers.

Dedicated Servers

A dedicated server or managed hosting server is a kind of Internet hosting server which is cannot be used by others other than the owner. i.e., the customer leases a dedicated server which is not shared among anybody. Dedicated server is more comfortable and flexible than shared server, as companies have complete power over the server(s), that including selection of operating system (OS), hardware, software etc. The complete support is provided by the provider for dedicated servers.

Dedicated servers are mostly present in data centers. It has got facilities similar to collocation facilities. It provides extra power sources and HVAC systems(Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems).

A virtual private server (VPS) also known as Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) is the process of splitting a server. Every virtual private server (VPS) is able to run on its own complete developed operating system (OS), and every server can be rebooted/restart independently.

Dedicated server providers ensure that the data stored in their network is secure by utilizing extreme security measures. Server providers usually spread various software programs to scan on the systems and the networks to identify unnoticeable encroachers, hackers, and spammer and many more problems like worms, Trojans and crashers.

Technology in Service

Sales the word may look very simple, but it involves a lot of technology and manpower in it. Starting form the industry, the product gets packaged and goes through a series of distributors/dealers before it reaches the end customers. Here technology plays a vital role in tracking the products of which distributor/dealer handles the product, which shop has it and sometimes also the name of the customer who owns it. This customer information is required for the latter part of sales i.e, service.

I would like to explain this with an example, I was staying in my brother’s house for a short while in Bangalore and my brother owns a Car. I took that car for service, with only the registration number of the car; they were able to trace all the details of that car. I felt okay with that as it was the same showroom where the car was bought. After some days, I took the car to a service centre in my native place there too the same thing happened, with only the registration number they too had all the details, It was amazing at that point of time, I am saying somewhere around 5-7 years back.

Now i can understand it is just having the data in a centralized place so that any service centre can retrieve the data at any point of time. This is how technology helps the companies provide efficient service to their products which can attract the KINGS from all over the world ie., "The Customers".

In recent days you cannot think of a business which does not have good service. Services with the customer satisfaction has added life to sales.

Sales &Services

No one can deny that business is the blood for the world. The so called blood has sales as its WBCs and RBCs (which we can term as wide big currencies and rolling business currencies). Without sales, a business is not called as business. It is called as bankruptcy.

The sales are the pulse for any business. Unlike our health, this pulse will do well even the rate of it is higher. In fact, the health of business will be good, only when this sales pulse is at higher rate. We can say many things about sales since it is the soul for any business. If the rate of profit is lost, then something is lost. If the rate of income is lost, then little thing is lost. If the rate of sale is lost, then everything is lost.

Now, along with sales, one more aspect has joined which is popularly known as service. In the larger scale, there are only two types of business available. One is sales and the other one is service. The sales are product oriented and service is "for the product". In recent years, there is a huge opening for services.

Museum

A museum is a place which houses and displays the objects having scientific or historical or artistic values. It cares for scientific, historic and artistically important objects and makes them available for the public to view. The exhibits can be permanent or temporary. Museums are located worldwide and it varies from large museums in large cities and local or small museums in countryside or towns.

The ancient time museum, like musaeum of Alexandria is equivalent to the modern graduate institute. In the beginning the museums are the private collections of wealthy individuals, families or institutions of art or curious natural objects and artifacts. These will be displayed only in wonder rooms. Only for the private art collections, public are allowed to visit.

The 1st Public museum in the world was in Europe. It was accessible only for the middle and upper-class people. It was very difficult to get the entrance. Then the genuine public museum was opened in Paris, Louvre Museum during the French revolution. It had free access for all stations and status of the people.

There are several types of museums found across the world. They are Archaeology museums, Art museums, History museums, Maritime museums, Military and war museums, Mobile museums, Natural history museums, Open air museums, Science museums, Specialized museums, Virtual museums, Zoological parks and botanic gardens etc.

Newspapers- Mirror of the society

The news papers reflect the society. In other words we can very well say it is the mirror of society.Even an ordinary citizen and readers can also express their views. There are varieties of things published in newspaper to express our thoughts and to convey some messages like editorial opinions, op-eds, obituaries, criticisms etc.. Newspaper also plays a major role in conveying news like advice, movie reviews, food and health related columns, plays, classified ads, display ads, editorial cartoons and comic strips.

As we see, in the current trend all the news are available for 24 hrs in the television channels and internet. It is really a challenge to the business of newspapers in several countries to compete with the other Medias. Hence all over the world the newspapers are uploaded as online editions to set back their audience.

But even now in the frenzy world people have the habit of reading newspaper with their morning coffee.

Newspaper

One of the best ways to gather or to gain information from various parts of this world, why not! about the whole universe, by being in one’s own place with no much efforts. Usually Newspaper carries articles or messages regarding political events, business, crime, entertainment, art, society sports etc in regular updates.

i.e. the every day activities or mainly some special and high prioritized happenings in almost all the fields are recorded in the newspapers. Mostly the truths, accidental issues, weather forecasts are notable columns. These are published on daily or weekly basis. The information in the newspapers differs from place to place, country to country, state to state and even city to city.

It is covered with articles along with their respective pictures which kindles more curiosity to the readers to go through. The first column includes all the head lines and the concerned references which makes readers to choose their interesting parts.

Almost all the orthodox papers have an editorial page which contains a separate column where the writers can express their opinion. The auxiliary sections are filled up with advertisements, comics, coupons etc.

Even the children have their own column where they can express their talents and inculcate knowledge by solving cross word puzzles, sudoku puzzles, quiz , and by some brain teasing games.

Evolution of Storage Disks Part III

A computer tape producing company by name Memorex (today a brand name of Imation), developed a read-write disk with a capacity of 175kB, and they called it as Memorex 650. This was fundamental for today’s hard disks; the Memorex 650 had tracks, sectors per tracks and some bytes per sector. This disk was out for the public in the year 1972.

As days passed on, in the year 1973 IBM released its first read write diskette. This new system was capable of storing 250¼kB of data. This new disk became very popular among the public and this disk format is known as Single Sided Single Density or SSSD format.

On the go, Burrough’s Corporation tried to develop a doubled sided 8-inch drive, with a capacity of 1MB. This storage capacity is 4 times bulkier than IBM’s SSSD. This disk provided enough room to run all softwares and store data. This diskette was produced in the year 1975, but was unpopular because of its poor quality.

Later in the year 1976, IBM released its Double Sided Single Density (DSSD) format disks with a storage capacity of 500KB and in the year 1977 IBM introduced a new format of disks known as Double Sided Double Density (DSDD) with a capacity of around 1-1.2 MB.

Evolution of Storage Disks Part II

As we keep talking about the evolution of storage disks, Can you guess who introduced the floppy disks? A small hint about that company, the company is a big computer giant, but I bet you, in today’s world you wouldn’t have seen any storage disks from this manufacturer.
Any guesses?

It was IBM who first developed the floppy disks. Before floppy disks came into existent, they used the conventional tapes to store data. These tapes were expensive and were working very slow. So they decided to move on to a new mode of storing data so that they can give their customers the software updates at a much cheaper price.

As a result of this evolved the floppy disks. The first floppy disk diskette was 8-inch in diameter. This is a read only diskette and was capable of holding 80kB of data. Initially the diskette was bare and hence it had serious dust problems. Then they made a cover of plastic lined with a fabric in order to protect the diskette from dust. These disks came out commercially in the year 1971.

Evolution of Storage Disks Part-I

It is really nice to see the advancing technology, growing step by step, slowly and steadily, meeting the needs of the human kind at the right time and making us comfortable in all aspects.

Can you guess when you saw a floppy for the last time or even a picture of it? Our thinking will roll back to our school days, the  antique computers there and beside them there used to be floppies. But I will tell you that you see the floppy almost every day. Confused? What is the  icon we use to represent Save. Yeah! It is the symbol of a floppy disk.

Floppy disks have made much impact when it comes to data storage. At present it might have worth little for us, but once it was the life of computers, they used to carry the whole Operating System in a floppy disk. The computer will not even boot without these floppies. I know you raise a question “then what about the software and games?” They too were in floppies. If you need any software take for example a word processor, then insert the floppy containing the files for this word processor, insert it load the software, use it and then remove the floppy out of the drive.

At this point of time I would like to share with you an interesting fact, hope many of you may know this, in today’s computers, we have drive letters for our hard disks, why does it start with the letter “C” (C:\) and not “A”(A:\) or “B”(B:\). The reason is simple, in olden computers they used two floppy drives named A:\ and B:\. The A drive is used to load the OS and the B drive is used to load the required soft wares, and then as technology evolved and came hard disks and so the drive letter for the hard disks started with C.

SIM Card

Subscriber Identity Module is the expansion of SIM card. It is a tiny memory chip which is used for all GSM mobile phones. Without SIM card the cell phone is considered to be dead. It is the life of mobile phones and even many youngsters too.

It contains the details of the subscriber, security data and memory space to store personal contact numbers and some text messages. It stores all the information which facilitates the network service provider to identify the caller. The data stored in the SIM card is used in selecting the network selection, based on the frequency of operation.
Since SIM contains all the information like phone number, text messages and other data, it can be called as a mini hard disk that can be inserted into any phone and the data can be retained. This helps the customer to change their handsets without losing important information.

SIM is a digital identification chip in mobile phones. It has the ability of validating and encoding which prevents others from tapping your call. SIM cards are usually region specific but they can work in all regions with the facility called Roaming which is facilitated by the network provider.

If ever the phone has been misplaced or stolen, it is possible to get another phone but it is a big task to get back all the contact numbers stored in the lost SIM. By using SIMKey Keyring Databank we can backup all the information. It’s a simple device in which the SIM need to be inserted and a simple procedure needs to be followed and the backup SIM will be ready.

As a development of technology, the SIM is used only in GSM phones. But in today’s world, GSM looks outdated and CDMA is coming into picture, There they don’t use SIM cards but instead they use a card called R-UIM (Re-Usable Identification Module) which is inbuilt in the phone and cannot be removed or changed to other handsets as in SIM cards.

Search Engines..

Getting information on the World Wide Web is basically with the help of search engines. While searching the web, the results are usually listed and it might be clicked by the users. his ‘click’ (clicking the link) is called as hit. Based upon the number of hits the ‘hit ratio’ increases and the traffic increases whenever the hit ratio increases. The searching content (information) may comprise of web pages, images, information and other types of files.

The operations of the search engines are basically algorithmic or a mixture of algorithmic and human input. It stores information about many web pages which is called indexing. Later it will be retrieved from the html itself and they are called web crawler. This is an automated web browser which follows all the links on the site. The content of each page are analyzed and then determined how it should be indexed. The function of an index is to provide information to be found as quickly as possible.

The user enters the key word in the search bar and in return the search engine examines the relevant and corresponding indices and provides a list of net matching results according to their criteria. Search engines generally support the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT. Some of the search engines use an advance search feature like proximity search.

There may be millions of web pages that contain information what the users need. Some pages may be relevant, popular or authoritative than the other pages as a result of their traffic ratio. Hence the search engines review and rank the results and bestow the apt result.

Shopping

Usually the idea of shopping is social and fun for Girls. We used to build civilizations. Now we build shopping malls. ~Bill Bryson

The shopping centres seemed to sweep upwards from the ground, its 5 princely floors all overflowing with people filling in all the shops, show rooms, food courts, burger shops, ice cream stalls, game centres, internet cafes etc..,

The enormous glass wall on the east side of the Mall hoarded huge advertisements of the shops and their offers. The big wedge was loaded with full of technological gadgets which could do anything a man or women could do, yet never even take a gasp for breath.

As people rush by, the music ooze out from the updated technologies, the music system and the centralized AC which adds up the extra delight. The escalators are not only the carrying hordes of people but also the huge trolleys with lots of stuff which they could not imagine to bear upwards to those princely floors with a beautiful awesome view.

Have a look at the gadgets around, the automated doors, big digital displays, the touch screens, giving an overall view of the mall, the enhanced security systems, fire sensors, alarms, the escalators, and the list goes on.. all these make people more comfortable. If men liked shopping, they'd call it research.

While guys will usually walk into a store (even with friends) and rush to find what are the latest gadgets available in the market with new features.

In spite of long office hours during the week days, at weekends/holidays we all get excited and get prepared for an intensive day-long outing., Going to as many shopping complexes carrying ourselves until our wallets become weightless and our plastic gets maxed out.

Women stay much longer in the stores than men; buy a lot of small but necessary purchases, such as new electronic cooking apparatus, a kitchen towel knitted with embroidery accessories or a new pillow case, notably the cosmetic stuffs even in which the technology has rooted in. Thanks to the manufacturers of make-up kits, what a wonderful use of it without harming our health.

Buying something on sale is a very special feeling. In fact, the less I pay for something, the more it is worth to me. “I have a dress that I paid so little for that I am afraid to wear it. I could spill something on it, and then how would I replace it for that amount of money?” ~Rita Rudner

Shopping is never a harm or wastage of money, its all about how you contrive it.

Go shop and visualize the growth of technology.
